KINA Ottoman / Table

KINA is a sculptural object at the intersection of art, craft and function. Designed for CondeHouse in 2017, its open ellipsoid form brings a quiet yet expressive presence to a room—equally compelling as furniture and art.

The frame is constructed from precisely engineered, arc-shaped Japanese birch elements: 22 pieces in the smaller size and 24 in the larger. Each curve is machine-molded and cut for accuracy, then carefully polished and oil-finished by hand. This balance of advanced technology and human craftsmanship gives KINA its refined, tactile character.

A natural cork top adds warmth, softness and visual contrast, allowing KINA to function as either an ottoman or a low table. Its layered form changes subtly with the light and viewing angle, creating a piece meant to be used, lived with and admired.

Natural Cork
A renewable material harvested from the bark of cork oak trees without cutting them down. Cork brings natural warmth, softness and resilience to KINA’s sculptural wooden frame.

Designer

David Trubridge is one of New Zealand’s most celebrated designers, internationally recognized for furniture and lighting inspired by nature, exploration and environmental responsibility.

His work has been produced and exhibited around the world. In 2008, L’Express named him one of the world’s top 15 designers, and in 2012, the Centre Pompidou in Paris acquired his Icarus installation for its permanent collection. His collaborations include Cappellini, Boffi and Offecct.

Trubridge describes himself as an explorer rather than a problem-solver. His work emerges from the spaces between structure and freedom, light and shadow, and form and feeling. KINA embodies this philosophy through its restraint, curiosity and profound respect for the natural world.
