The Story Behind HAKAMA

The HAKAMA collection explores the relationship between tradition and modern craftsmanship.

Designer MHK drew inspiration from the flowing folds found in traditional Japanese hakama garments, translating their sense of movement into solid wood. What could have been a purely decorative gesture instead becomes the defining structural element of the table.

Each leg is carefully shaped with wave-like grooves that create shifting light and shadow across the surface. As the legs descend toward the floor, the grooves subtly widen, producing a visual effect that feels both stable and dynamic.

The challenge lies in the precision required to execute these forms while preserving the integrity and strength of the wood. Every carved surface must feel intentional, balanced, and harmonious from every viewpoint.

Twice each year, CondeHouse Japan releases a carefully selected inventory program featuring customer favorites, award-winning designs, and notable new introductions.

These pieces are handcrafted in Hokkaido, Japan and shipped to CondeHouse's California warehouse as part of a limited small-batch release program. The collection represents some of CondeHouse's most celebrated designs, allowing select pieces to be enjoyed without the lead times typically associated with made-to-order Japanese furniture.

Inventory is intentionally limited and reflects only a small portion of the broader CondeHouse collection. Each piece maintains the same materials, craftsmanship, and quality standards found throughout the brand's made-to-order offerings.
