In 2007, Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay established the design studio Raw Edges in London. They value design that holds form, function, and color, with an approach that leaves plenty of room for playfulness and inquisitiveness. Using this rich philosophy, they have been able to offer their designs for use in collaborative products with brands known throughout the world, including Vitra, LOUIS VUITTON, and STELLA McCARTNEY. They have received awards including Elle Decoration, Edida Award, and Wallpaper Design Award.

Collaboration Rooted in Japanese Craft & Global Design

The CRUST series was created through Japan Creative, a 2011 initiative designed to share Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship with the world by pairing Japanese manufacturers with international designers. For this project, CondeHouse collaborated with the London-based studio Raw Edges to develop the CRUST tables and stools. Inspired by their time in Asahikawa, the designers set out to create something entirely new—combining innovative structure and unexpected color to reveal a fresh, imaginative dimension of CondeHouse.

Inspired by Asahikawa, the Heart of Japanese Woodworking

Asahikawa is the center of Japan’s woodworking industry, known for its natural resources and skilled artisans. During their visit to the CondeHouse factory, Raw Edges observed how carefully the craftspeople shape locally sourced wood into refined furniture. Building on the techniques that CondeHouse has cultivated for more than 50 years, the designers worked to express a new aesthetic rooted in both tradition and experimentation.

Craftsmanship in Curves: A Fusion of Cultures

Though the CRUST pieces appear simple in their round and elliptical forms, each one requires a precise process of peeling, joining, and shaping wood into smooth, continuous curves. Drawing inspiration from founder Minoru Nagahara—who believed in uniting Japanese living with European design principles—Raw Edges created a collection that embodies a fusion of cultures, expressed through the layered Japanese Oak that defines every CRUST piece.
